Nonverbal Communication and Body Language

A one-day course on reading and sending nonverbal signals

One day 65 slides Editable PowerPoint and Word Instant download

Overview

A one-day course on interpreting and sending nonverbal messages. Participants work through the six areas of nonverbal communication — kinesics, haptics, vocalics, proxemics, chronemics and self-presentation — and apply the five Cs of decoding before practising techniques for showing listening, building rapport and demonstrating confidence. The pack gives a trainer scripted session notes, timed activities and fully editable materials for classroom or online delivery.

Format. One day (about 7 hours including breaks); can run as two half days or a series of 2-hour online sessions. Designed for classroom delivery and adaptable to live online sessions.

Who it is for. Open level — anyone who wants to decode other people's nonverbal signals and manage the ones they send, at work or elsewhere.

What delegates take away

  • Identify the characteristics, types and functions of nonverbal communication.
  • Analyze other people's nonverbal signals using the five Cs: context, clusters, congruence, consistency and culture.
  • Read signs across the six areas of nonverbal communication: kinesics, haptics, vocalics, proxemics, chronemics and self-presentation.
  • Recognize how culture, context and individual differences change the meaning of nonverbal signs.
  • Apply strategies for sending clearer nonverbal messages, including showing active listening, building rapport and demonstrating confidence.

Course outline

Defines nonverbal communication and covers its areas, influences, functions, characteristics and uses at work.

Introduces context, clusters, congruence, consistency and culture as the frame for reading other people's signals.

Covers the six universal facial expressions, types of smile, eye contact, hand and leg positions and potential lying gestures, with a guess-the-expression activity.

Examines the functions of touch, what to be aware of when using it, and what different handshakes convey.

Looks at how the elements of the voice and nonverbal vocal sounds carry meaning alongside words.

Covers the four space zones, territoriality and how seating arrangements affect interaction.

Deals with time as a communication signal and what dress, environment and artifacts say about a person.

Applies the course to sending signals — engaging an audience, showing that you are listening, building rapport and demonstrating confidence — and closes with reflection and future planning.
