Stress Management and Burnout Prevention
A half-day workshop on managing stress and preventing burnout at work
Overview
A half-day, trainer-led course on how stress works, how burnout develops, and what prevents it. Participants map their pressure-performance curve, identify their early warning signs, audit their job demands and resources, build a recovery routine grounded in published research, and leave with a four-line personal plan. The pack includes scripted trainer notes, editable slides, a workbook, five handouts and two case studies.
Format. Half day. Designed for classroom delivery and adaptable to live online sessions.
Who it is for. Open level: employees at any level who work under sustained pressure, and the managers and team leaders who support them. No prior knowledge assumed; suits groups of 8 to 20, in person or online. Also useful for HR and wellbeing leads delivering internal wellbeing programmes.
What delegates take away
- Distinguish pressure from stress and recognise when pressure stops improving performance.
- Identify personal early warning signs and the three dimensions of burnout.
- Audit job demands and resources, and act on what they can control, influence or must accept.
- Apply evidence-based recovery practices: psychological detachment, relaxation, mastery and control.
- Raise a concern with a colleague showing signs of strain, without diagnosing or intruding.
- Build a four-line personal stress management plan with a dated first step.
Course outline
Separates pressure from stress, walks through what the stress response does physically, and uses the pressure-performance curve to show when stretch becomes strain. Participants mark where they currently sit on the curve and what moves them.
Defines burnout using the WHO's three dimensions, contrasts it with ordinary stress, and covers early warning signs across body, thinking, behaviour and relationships, plus the six workplace mismatches that drive burnout. Participants build a private warning-signs inventory.
Applies the job demands-resources model to each participant's actual workload. Participants audit their demands and resources, sort every demand into control, influence or accept, and draft the opening of a workload conversation with their manager.
Covers how appraisal shapes the stress response, a two-minute breathing practice for pressure moments, and the four recovery experiences research shows restore energy. Participants score their week against the four experiences and design a recovery routine.
How to spot warning signs in a colleague, raise a concern by describing observations rather than delivering verdicts, and point to support without playing counsellor. Groups work a case study of a strong performer sliding towards burnout.
Each participant condenses the session into a four-line plan: one demand to reduce, one resource to build, one recovery practice to protect, and an early-warning tripwire with a named, dated first step.
